Extra Credit Service Learning Project
Mrs. Murphy’s Language Arts Class
Southwest Middle School
The data shows that students who participate in service learning projects in their communities have far more academic benefits than those who do not. This is an opportunity for students to give back to their communities and improve their grades at the same time. This is also a great opportunity for students to self-reflect. These service opportunities should provide a challenge, which allows students to think about the vast needs within their communities and the impact each individual is capable of having. Hopefully, students will gain confidence, respect and appreciation for themselves and others through the completion of this project each quarter. It was an opportunity like this, which redirected my path as a young adult, and I hope that each student has an equally profound experience. The guidelines for this project are explained below.
Before completing the final product, students must complete at least 15 hours of service with one organization. Please provide proof of service (such as a note/log signed by a supervisor of the organization). This project will count for an extra credit formal grade (100 points).
The 15 hours of service, and completion of the project must be done by the final day of grades each quarter. If you choose to complete this extra credit opportunity each quarter, you may choose a different organization with which to serve each quarter. With the link at the bottom of the page you are provided a list of organizations in our community, as a starting point. You may choose one that I have provided, or one of your own choosing.
